Senior Research Position in Software Engineering at NICTA (Sydney, Australia)

We are seeking a thought leader and future mentor for the software engineering research team in NICTA. We want a person keen to pursue "use inspired" research and enjoy the full research lifecycle "from imagination to impact". The person we seek will have a history of publications in leading conferences and journals, demonstrated track record in successful PhD supervision, success in attracting grant funds and defining and carrying out research projects which have industrial impact. Experience in research commercialisation is also valued.

We currently have 13 research staff, several research engineers and 12 PhD students in our software engineering team.

We have one large project (ArMaTure) funded through to the end of 2011 and other new project proposals in the pipeline.

NICTA (http://nicta.com.au/) is a world-class research institute able to drive innovation through high-quality research, training and technology transfer. NICTA uniquely combines excellence in research, education, commercialisation and collaboration. It seeks to create intellectual and economic wealth for Australia through the development of the Information Communications Technology (ICT) research industry.

We are a national organisation with five laboratories in four cities:
Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane. NICTA brings together many of Australia's and the world's top researchers in ICT. We have currently
298 research students and 426 staff. Our unique culture fosters a highly entrepreneurial environment. Our research focuses on 'use-inspired' basic research that leads to fundamental improvements in understanding and benefits industry, the community and the national interest. Four spin out companies have been created since our beginning five years ago and we currently have 93 active patent applications and achieved 669 publications in 2008. NICTA is funded by The Australian Commonwealth Government through the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy and the Australian Research Council.

The software engineering research team in NICTA Sydney ATP laboratory is looking to appoint a new senior principal researcher. This position will also carry a full professor position at either The University of New South Wales or the University of Sydney. The research team has its roots in empirical software engineering and was founded by Ross Jeffery when NICTA was first created and funded. Today the team is focussed on research in software and systems architecture, software and business process, embedded systems, cloud computing, and empirical software engineering. The major application domains in which this work is carried out are government, finance and defence.
