Service Science and Engineering for New Global Challenges
=========================================================

Call for Papers

In recent years the use of services for Open Systems development has consolidated and strengthened. Services are usually developed by third parties, leading to their availability, distribution, and location in public libraries. The use of a combination of services in the building of open systems requires new disciplines and methods in software engineering. The advances achieved have allowed the growth of a Service Science and Engineering (SSE) community, firstly through the reinforcement of Web Services and Semantic Web technologies and then the presence of new Cloud Computing techniques oriented to services such as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) or more recently the proliferation of micro-services solutions. Currently, service industry presents society with new global challenges through the interrelationship between Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT), and Smart Cities solutions. Challenges involve the use of new scientific programming concepts in SSE for grid computing, high performance computing, machine learning (ML) solutions, security issues, and processing very large data sets.

In this special issue we invite original contributions providing novel approaches towards Service technologies for new global challenges in Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT), or Smart Cities. The aim of this special issue is to assemble visions, ideas, experiences, and research achievements in these areas.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

New SSE methodologies applied to the new global challenges
Concepts, technologies, and best practices of microservice architectures
Conjunction of model-driven engineering and SSE solutions
Conjunction of Big Data, IoT, and Smart Cities solutions
Service engineering in smart environments and IoT
Scientific programming for Smart Cities solutions
