EPSRC/UK and Thales Industrial Conversion Computer Science PhD studentship on System Architecture Evaluation

http://www.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate/funding/search/list/cs048

Capturing and analysing system architectures at an early stage of the systems lifecycle is now becoming a widely accepted practice in companies that produce critical applications. The focus of the PhD study will be on developing advanced methods and tools for early evaluation of architectures to meet system requirements. As part of this study we will develop a model-based approach that can express the architecture and document the evaluation process. In this study the main focus will be on evaluating how the system reliability and resource-constraints requirements are met. The methods developed will allow reasoning about the interplay between various system characteristics in a consistent way. The methodology will be supported by prototype tools and architectural styles, which will also be developed as part of the study. The work will be driven by the needs of the industrial partner and will be conducted in a close cooperation with this partner; thus providing an insight into commercial R&D as part of the study.

This industrial studentship is partially supported by Thales. The student will be spending several weeks each year in the company to learn the technologies used and to evaluate the findings of the PhD study. The expenses of all the trips to the company and to scientific conferences will be covered by the studentship. The stipend is £19.000 (2015/16) per year. This is a 3.5 years study.

You should have or be close to completing either a First class honours degree or 2.1 in Computing Science, Mathematics, Electrical and Computer Engineering or other relevant science or engineering subject. A distinction level Masters degree in a related subject will be a plus. Equivalent experience will also be considered.

The EPSRC studentship eligibility criteria: https://www.epsrc.ac.uk/skills/students/help/eligibility/ Only UK applicants and EU applicants who have been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years are eligible for the full fee and stipend.
