The computer science department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel is offering a part-time position as professor to reinforce its software languages and software engineering branch. The position is published under the heading:

	WE/2016/002 - Senior Academic Staff - 20% – Computer Science / Software Languages

on the university's job offers website located at http://vub.talentfinder.be.

The planned starting date for this position is October 1st, 2016. Contract duration is 3 academic years. The deadline for applying is April 2nd, 2016.
Applications should reach us through the website. The person to contact for further information is:

	Wolfgang De Meuter
	Software Languages Lab
	email: wdmeuter at vub.ac.be
	phone: +32 2 629 34 81

** Function **
- Research
The candidate is expected to reinforce the Software Languages Lab (SOFT – http://soft.vub.ac.be). He/she will be active in the domain of “Rich Internet Applications (RIAs)”, i.e. the vision that the web has become a wide-area distributed virtual machine rather than a document delivery service. We are looking for a candidate who can study the software engineering aspects of RIAs. This may vary from studying empirically how RIAs are developed and maintained in practice (keywords: mining software repositories, empirical studies, evidence-based software engineering); to the design and formalisation of novel software technology for distribution, security and data consistency (keywords: program analysis, techniques and tools for code-level security, eventually-consistent distributed data-structures, parallelism for distributed clients and servers, ...).

- Teaching
The assignment that corresponds to a 20% appointment consists of teaching a general computer science course at the bachelor level or a specialised course at the master level. The exact course will depend on the expertise of the candidate and will be negotiated with the candidate. The candidate’s teaching profile has to fit the teaching philosophy of the VUB’s bachelor and master programs in computer science. More information can be found on the website of the programs. Apart from this teaching assignment, the candidate will also participate in guiding students for programming projects, bachelor theses as well as master theses.

At the bachelor level, the candidate should be able to teach in Dutch (or he/she must be willing to learn Dutch in a relatively short period). At the master level, the candidate should be able to teach in English.

- Other
The selected candidate is also expected to contribute to the supervision of Ph.D. and M.Sc. students, and to launch and seek funding for new research projects.

The selected candidate must be available at the university for a period that corresponds to one day per week.

** Profile **
- Ph.D. in Computer Science with a master background in Computer Science.
- The research culture of the Software Languages Lab has a strong tradition in dynamic languages. The candidate should fit in this culture. He/she has to extend it in the direction of empirical research of existing software technology for RIAs, or in the direction of novel development tools and/or middleware for RIAs.
- The candidate has experience with guiding PhD and/or master students. He/she has a proven track record (or demonstrable potential) for launching new research and for seeking the funds to support it.
- Female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.
- Every first appointment is dependent upon the successful delivery of a teaching session.

** Additional Information **
- The opportunity exists to combine the 20% faculty position with a 80% researcher position on running projects such that the candidate has a full-time position in the Software Languages Lab. Alternatively, the 20% faculty position can be combined with a position at another research lab, as long as a sufficient availability of the candidate for the Software Languages Lab is guaranteed.
