The CISTER Research Centre (https://www.cister.isep.ipp.pt/), an
internationally renowned research centre in real-time and embedded
systems, invites applications for 8 PhD student positions in
Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Computer Science (CS),
Software Engineering (SE), or Applied Mathematics (AM), to engage in
an ambitious research plan in the area of Real-Time & Embedded
Computing (RTES).

Embedded processors represent around 96% of all processors available
worldwide, and are present in a wide variety of systems that operate
in the various sectors of society. Examples include mobile devices,
home appliances, as well as highly complex and safety-critical systems
such as airplanes, satellites, and cars.

RTES is therefore a key research area whose results are fundamental
for boosting the development of the future generation of highly
complex and automated computing systems in virtually all application
domains. Notable examples are aerospace and defence systems,
autonomous transportation systems, Internet of Things, energy aware
and green computing, smart factory automation and advanced medical
devices and applications. CISTER actively participates to the
development of new cutting-edge technologies through major
international projects such as ENABLE-S3 (on Novel Validation &
Verification Procedures for Highly Automated Systems), Productive 4.0
(on the Digitalization of the European Industry) or SCOTT (on Building
Trust in the Internet of Things).

The accepted candidates will engage on a highly ambitious PhD research
plan, under the supervision of CISTER’s internationally renowned
researchers, and will become part of an international and
multi-cultural research team with a leading research track on multiple
hot topics of RTES.

This research environment is boosted by strong collaborations with
various world reputed academic institutions as well as with key
international industrial players such as Airbus, Thales, Volvo,
Renault, Toyota, Embraer, Honeywell, Siemens, Philips, IBM, Critical
Software, TTTech, AVL, EFACEC, GMV or Bosch.

CISTER and the City of Porto will also be at the centre of the
Cyber-Physical Systems world in 2018, with the organization of the
CPSWeek 2018 (www.cpsweek.org).

The accepted candidates will be hosted by CISTER and will enrol in one
of the PhD programs offered by its academic partnerships: the PhD
Program offered by the University of Porto on ECE (PDEEC program) or
on CS/SE (PRODEI program), or the PhD Program offered by the MAP-i
initiative (CS/SE) lead by the Universities of Minho, Aveiro and
Porto. Highly performing students may be given the opportunity to
engage in a Dual PhD Program with the Carnegie Mellon University. More
