The Systems and Computing Engineering Department at Universidad de los
Andes, in Bogotá Colombia, invites applications for a tenure-track
(Assistant Professor entry level) faculty position. We are primarily
interested in recruiting excellent candidates in the area of theoretical
computer science, including algorithms and data structure design; software
verification; program semantics; computational complexity; and parallel and
distributed computation.
The Systems and Computing Engineering Department at Universidad de los
Andes is committed to perform research of excellence at the highest
international level in computer science, programming languages, and
software engineering. Universidad de los Andes is the top ranked university
in Colombia and among the top ten Universities in Latin-America.
* Working at Universidad de los Andes
Universidad de los Andes is located in the city center of Bogotá, the
capital of Colombia, with 122 study programs and over 14500 undergraduate
students and 5000 postgraduate students. The department has 750 students at
the undergraduate level and 500 at the master level (divided in 7 study
programs), and 24 faculty members. The university offers an ideal working
environment, combining the best aspects of a research centered university
with a commitment to high-quality education. Researchers can focus on
developing new ideas and interdisciplinary projects, in collaboration with
faculty, post-docs, and students from within the department and other
departments at the university. Faculty members are required to teach
courses both at the bachelor and master level. They are also encouraged to
guide bachelor and master theses, as well as to mentor Ph.D. students.
The working environment at the FLAG research lab, where the position will
be filled, is primarily in English. Nonetheless, the successful applicant
is expected to be integrated in the department and the university in
different social aspects, and should have a proficient Spanish level (C1)
upon the five year review.
The university offers compensation for 12 months with competitive salaries
at an international scale. They include social security provisions in
accordance with existing national Colombian legislation, and flexible
benefits related to childcare, health, and assurances, among others.
* Selection Process
The main selection criteria are the candidate's demonstrated ability and
commitment to research, the match of interests with the mission of the
department, and the willingness and capacity to teach computer science
courses at both undergraduate and master level.
The candidate should also demonstrate collaboration experiences with
interdisciplinary teams as this will be a critical ability for interaction
with other areas of established strengths both within the department and
within other departments and faculties.
This position requires a doctoral degree in Computer Science or a closely
related area, earned by the expected start date. Candidates for
tenure-track positions should demonstrate exceptional promise in research
and have displayed an ability to work independently as well as
collaboratively. Qualifiable candidates should have a convincing research
record, proficient level of written and oral English. If the candidate is
not Spanish speaking, she or he must commit to acquire a sufficient level
to teach in Spanish as quickly as possible (less than two years).
Additionally, experience in undergraduate and graduate level teaching and
student guidance is highly appreciated.
The selection process includes an oral presentation of a research plan and
a class simulation on the topic of dynamic programming for a second year
algorithm design course for shortlisted candidates.
For full consideration, complete applications must be received by October
01, 2019, although applications will continue to be accepted until the
positions are filled.
We expect the selected candidate to join the department between 01/11/2019
and 15/06/2020.
