CFP: The 2nd Workshop on Emerging Wireless Technologies for FutureMobile Networks (WEWFMN 2014)
Download the PDF version of the Call for Papers here
Scope
To alleviate the capacity crunch in mobile networks, emerging wireless technologies aimed to improve spectrum efficiency; network efficiency and energy efficiency are being actively studied and developed in both wireless academia and industry. To succeed, effort is envisioned to come from multiple dimensions including 1) spectrum efficiency enhancement, 2) small cell deployment and 3) novel network architectures. First, advanced multiple antenna technology such as massive multiple-input-multiple output (MIMO), virtual MIMO, full-dimensional MIMO and 3-D beamforming are promising techniques to enhance per-user spectrum efficiency and system capacity. Second, by deploying dense small cells within the local-area range and bringing the network closer to end-users, small cell and heterogeneous networks (HetNets) can potentially improve spectrum resource reuse, spatial resource reuse and communication coverage, thus allowing future mobile networks to achieve higher data rates, while retaining the seamless connectivity and mobility of current mobile network deployments. In addition, from network side, new and novel network architectures such as soft-defined network, cloud-RAN (radio access network), cognitive radio networks and a combination of cloud computing and mobile networks as well as the enabling technologies can further improve network efficiency and enable rich user experience. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researches which focus on emerging wireless technologies that improve spectrum efficiency, energy efficiency and network efficiency for future mobile networks.

Welcome to the First Workshop on Cloud and Server Support for Wearable Computing
co-located with the 11th International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems(MobiQuitous'14),
Call for Papers
We cordially invite you to submit a paper to the 1st Workshop on Cloud and Server Support for Wearable Computing at MobiQuitous 2014. The workshop will be held at the 11th International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Computing, Networking and Service (MobiQuitous 2014), in London, Great Britain.
Recent years have seen the dramatic increase in both the popularity and the capabilities of wearable computers. These devices provide unprecedented ability to track, measure, monitor, and interact with our environment and other devices and individuals. These abilities are augmented with backend cloud- and server-based analysis to gain insight, detect trends, spur interaction, as well as identify and correct problems and keep the devices operational. The rate, specificity, and timeliness of data collection combined with the ongoing personal interaction with the systems make the data problem qualitatively different than the existing big data challenges. Remotely updating, monitoring and maintaining these devices are also significant challenges for large scale operation.
The purpose of this workshop it to bring together practitioners, researcher, vendors, and scholars from the complementary fields of cloud infrastructure, data analytics, and wearable computers, in order to promote an exchange of ideas, develop common benchmarks and methodologies, discuss further collaborations and develop new research directions related to the back-end support for wearable computers.
We seek submissions that cover various aspects of cloud and server support for wearable computing. In addition to submissions that deal with performance and programmability challenges, theoretical analysis, algorithms, and practical experience in cloud- and server-side for wearable computing, we also specifically encourage submissions that demonstrate or result from the collaboration between cloud and wearable computer practitioners, scholars, researchers, or vendors. Topics of interest to this workshop include, but are not restricted to:
Cognitive computing supporting and servicing wearable computers
Use of cloud systems in wearable data analytics
Cloud infrastructure for high performance and high productivity
Wearable data analytics algorithms and applications
Collective data sharing for wearable computers
Data compression and storage for wearable computers

CFP: Workshop on Internet of Things Ecosystems:
Computing, Networking and Services
Download the PDF version of the Call for Papers here
Scope
The vision for an Internet of Things calls for an open, inclusive and standards-based environment that fosters innovation. Reference to the Internet in this context relates to its transformational effect over closed proprietary systems, and its ability to enable a creative commons of innovation. Yet, the reality of the IoT today is one of fragmentation, characterised by information silos that are seeking to protect competitive advantage: Makers of innovative IoT products and services favour defensive strategies aiming to safeguard their investments; and, traditional automatic identification and data capture technology providers are accustomed to closed systems and wishing to perpetuate familiar business practices.
Closed system strategies offer short term advantage as they locks out potential competitors. Yet, in the longer term they are inefficient for the market as a whole by placing barriers to the development of IoT ecosystems.
There are two main reasons for this: Firstly, vertical integration increases complexity and thus decreases the quality of the end user experience of the IoT, which is determined ``by how products work together, in concert, with the rest of the ecosystem, not just by [...] any product on its own, no matter how good that individual experience will be'' as explained by Buxton. Second, vertical integration hinders the activation of network effects ---the value of a product or service increases with the number of people participating in it--- a critical factor for success perhaps best highlighted by the success of the Internet.
The purpose of this workshop it to bring together researchers from academia and industry, practitioners, IoT vendors, and application-domain stakeholders to discuss the costs and benefits of emerging IoT ecosystems and the move from a vertical to horizontal model of integration. We seek submissions that cover all aspects of system-level architecture, service provision and network infrastructure as well as papers that consider domain specific concerns. We specifically encourage submissions that demonstrate or report on successful experiences in developing consensus across application domains in the development of IoT ecosystems.
Topics
We are seeking papers that present original and unpublished contributions addressing the themes of the workshop. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
System architectures and reference models for horizontal IoT integration
Federation of heterogenous IoT systems
Cognitive and semantic capabilities in IoT systems
Experiences with specific architectures within particular application domains
Industrial use cases
Emerging applications with special reference to social aspects of IoT
Standardisation supporting the shift form vertical to horizontal integration of IoT
Paper submission
Submitted papers must be no more than 8 pages in length. Authors are required to use the tighter alternate style of the standardACM proceedings format. Each submission will receive at least three reviews from the technical program committee and authors of selected submission will have 30 minutes to present their work at the workshop. Papers should be submitted in electronic form to g.roussos at bbk.ac.uk.
